My new regime of posting three posts a month has fallen at the first hurdle. Basically, I ran out of time to give each one the attention it deserved.

The worst was the Tom Pears, what I’m reading post. It went out before I wrote up the review, my fault entirely. I will leave the review for his trilogy for another day. But on a happier note, read on for my review of Candice Zee’s book The Munchkins.
The Munchkins
Instead of reading all of his books, I read a middle-grade fantasy for a friend of mine, Candice Zee. Candice and I are part of an active Middle-Grade facebook group who have given me loads of help, advice and support. And in return, I hope I give as much back as I receive.

Candice’s book, The Munchkins, is set in small town América and her main characters are thirteen orphans who have special powers. They live with foster-dad, CC, who won’t let them use their powers, and their main foe is Big Boss, who lives next door, and stalks them whenever they leave the house, and tricks them into using their powers.
Cass has done a brilliant job of giving her thirteen protagonists individual voices, different magical skills and, as the story develops, they show their true selves. The selfish, the arrogant, the mediator and the sides they take. It is full of characterful kids and how they interact with each other. Plus, the beautifully written underlying menace of Big Boss, tricking and manipulating the kid’s behaviour from his lair, next door.
I can’t wait to read the second in the series. I loved the vibrancy of her characters and reading about the challenges they and CC face.
